Under Pressure: Techniques of Printmaking
Curated by David Maskill
This exhibition of prints presents the range of techniques used in hand-made printmaking. All prints begin with a matrix. The matrix can be a block of wood, a piece of linoleum, a metal plate, a stencil, a lithographic stone, or any material on which an image can be transcribed and fixed in some way. The image is made by cutting, gouging, or simply drawing on the matrix. Ink is then applied to the matrix which allows the image to be transferred to a support, usually paper, by applying pressure. There are three principal types of print – relief prints, intaglio prints and planographic prints. Within these three types, different techniques are used.
