About

social is a contemporary art gallery run by industry professionals with the intention of enhancing young people and encouraging them to participate in the arts. Opened in February 2024, social presents monthly solo and group shows with a focus on national art of significance, emerging art and thematic group shows. We work closely with artists and curators to realise ambitious projects. We offer tailored internships to rangatahi so that they may realise their dreams and develop a career in the arts. In between exhibitions we hold performances, events and special projects across disciplines to support collaboration with the Te Whanganui-a-Tara community.

Proposals

social accepts project proposals for exhibitions that advance the space’s mission of furthering the conversation on contemporary art in Te Whanganui a Tara. We want to partner with artists, curators and others to produce challenging, inspiring and engaging exhibitions, talks, film screenings, workshops and special projects, often, but not exclusively, within a non-commercial context.

Artists and curators are invited to submit an initial brief outline of their project along with images if possible. Exhibitions usually run for 4-6 weeks and we encourage dialogue around the development of programming events to complement the exhibition.

If you are interested in submitting a proposal please contact socialgallery@bgi.org.nz

Internships

social offers internships to individuals, regardless of educational background, the chance to gain hands-on experience in a professional gallery setting. Interns will have the opportunity to cultivate their interest and develop their skills and knowledge in areas such as curatorial practices, exhibition development, communications, and public programming. Through active participation in various aspects of the gallery’s operations, interns will gain valuable insights and practical experience.
